The career does not expect you to be a university degree holder. Even if you have passed a school diploma, it is enough. However, knowing more than one language will be an added qualification.
As a tour guide, you should have a thorough knowledge of the area of your operation. If you are operating in a historic site, or a heritage site you must know the history in detail and must be in a position to explain to your visitors. Your communicating skills should be extraordinary. Your skills in organizing and coordinating tested with your tour operator should be good. You must be the first to arrive at the hotel in the morning and check whether all the equipments and other things have been loaded into the vehicle, introduce yourself to the visitors, explain the various places of interest you are covering for the day, give a commentary of the places on your way to the destination. You ought to have patience and must not loose your cool to the various questions posed by the visitors. You must always have an eye on the visitors to check if any body is violating the local laws.
You must have pleasing manners and a cheerful personality. You must be able to resolve conflicts if any among the visitors during the visit .You must also make sure that no visitor has left the troupe. You may be required to provide first aid in case of an emergency so, be trained yourself in providing first aid. Before starting out for the tour, find out if any visitor is suffering from any ailment, so that you can advice them to take the proper medication and explain to them the weather conditions in the area where you are taking them for the visit. Your qualities are your tools of advertisement for you. If the visitors are happy with your knowledge and manners they will definitely recommend you to their friends who will be visiting your area.
You can seek employment with leading tour operators of your area and after some years of experience, you can start your own as a tour operator.
