The Indian economy has benefitted greatly with the advances in liberalization and globalization. These changes have seen a growth in all sectors, especially the industrial, the service, and the finance.
 Rapid development has lead to the construction of many power projects, roads, sites for heavy industries, apartment complexes, telecom infrastructure etc. These projects require a high degree of finesse, and can only be done by the people with required expertise in this field. Assigning these tasks to any Tom, Dick and Harry can have potentially disastrous consequences on the project. So the need of a qualified construction manager arises.
Construction management hosts a lot of services under its banner. It involves a series of planning, designing, budgeting and constructing programs for a construction management project to succeed. These projects are highly complex, and since they involve many services, the absolute collaboration of many individuals is needed. It is the job of a construction manager to see to it that everything is going on smooth, and there are no lapses.
Increasing number of universities is offering exciting courses in the field of construction management. There are Post Graduate Diplomas available in this field, and they are open to only B.Tech students, because of the technical nature of the work. Some premium institutes offering courses are the National Institute of Construction Planning and Research, Pune; Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and Anna University, Chennai.
Opportunities for employment of the construction managers are limitless. Every project, be it government or private, needs a well qualified and resourceful person to overlook the project. Railways, highway organization, and defense are the front-runners in the government section, while the heavy industries, shipping companies and refineries are the private sectors which employ most of the construction managers.
The work involves being at the construction site, and knowing all the details about the project as minutely as possible. As for the salaries, a well-qualified person really has no limits to salary, if working in a private organization. Public/government organizations are good to start with. The career is definitely promising, and more and more number of people is looking forward to joining this stream.
